Fear, anxiety, and frustration come in waves I can’t always predict. Working as a caregiver for three years has shown me the quiet struggles of aging—the way life can shift overnight. I’ve witnessed resilience in the elderly, but I’ve also seen how fragile health and independence can become.
That reality hit closer to home this past June when my mom, just 69, had a minor stroke. She spent a few days in the hospital and, in her unshakable strength, returned to work the very night she was released. On the outside, she was determined to keep moving. On the inside, I was holding back my own fear—knowing how quickly life can change.
Sometimes it feels like my heart carries too much at once: caregiving, being a daughter, being a mother. Today, though, I found a small breath of relief. A simple phone call with my son’s therapist reminded me that progress is happening, that he’s moving forward. In that moment, my chest loosened.
Fighting fear doesn’t always mean conquering it—it means finding those glimpses of peace in the middle of uncertainty. It means trusting the process, leaning on the victories, no matter how small, and letting them soften the weight of what we carry.
To anyone fighting their own fears—know this: you don’t have to erase anxiety to keep moving forward. Relief comes in pieces, peace shows up in small victories, and strength is found in choosing to breathe, even when life feels heavy. Care for your loved ones, yes—but don’t forget to also care for yourself in the process.
